Starting Indoors:
Not recommended.
Starting Outdoors:
Sow in early spring, 3 weeks before the last frost, and sucessive sow at last frost date in moderate summer areas.
PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Sweet sultan is an old-fashioned honey-scented flower described in the 1600s by an English herbalist as a "stranger of much beauty lately from Constantinople." At home in the cottage garden and cutting garden, its soft thistle-like flowers keep blooming if deadheaded or cut for bouquets regularly. Site in well-drained soils. Performs best in cool to moderate summer areas.
Watering Details:
Drought tolerant once established. 1" of water per week initially, then water during dry spells.

Neutral to slightly alkaline
Fertilizer:
Mix in a few inches of compost and some lime prior to planting.
Diseases & Pests:
Avoid fungal troubles by placing in a location that has good air circulation.
When to Cut for Bouquets:
Harvest when flowers are beginning to open.
