SOWING INSTRUCTIONS
Starting Indoors:
Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before setting out after frost. Use a sterile seed starting mix and cover lightly with vermiculite to retain humidity. Water from the bottom by placing in a tray so that the water is soaked up instead of wetting the foliage to prevent damping off. Keep at about 65-75°F until all have germinated then grow on at 55°F.
Starting Outdoors:
Direct sow after last spring frost.
PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
I can hardly imagine a garden without salvia; the genus has many irreplaceable floral gems. They are easy to grow and trouble-free, many are quick to bloom, and they grow well in gardens. Those pesky deer avoid it, perhaps stayed by the unpleasant aroma of the bruised leaves. Balkan sage is perennial, growing basal foliage of thick hairy leaves and shooting up flowering stems in early summer for about six weeks. Provide loamy soils with good drainage.
Fertilizer:
Mix compost into the soil prior to planting. Salvia are light feeders, however a midsummer application of organic granular fertilizer low in nitrogen but higher in phosphorus and potassium will promote flowering.
When to Cut for Bouquets:
Cut when about 1/2 of florets are open.
