Purple Bell Vine

Rhodochiton atrosanguineum
Introduced from its native Mexico in 1833 this refined beauty has small heart-shaped toothed leaves often edged in burgundy on twining stems. The violet bell-shaped flowers have a maroon "clapper," the 2" flowers swaying from the ends of thread-like stems. Grow in containers or twining up string trellises, where it becomes a garland of floral chimes until late fall freezes.

PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Purple bell vine is a delicate looking but vigorous vine that thrives in sheltered spot in the border or in a container with a trellis to climb, where the showy blossoms and long lasting calyxes can be appreciated up close. Pinch when setting out to develop branching growth and more flowering. Overwinter indoors if desired, bringing in when night temperatures are in the low 40's. Site in a sunny, south-facing window.
