PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, but not deer, beardtongue provides a welcome vertical focal point in sunny borders, cottage and container gardens. Prefers very well-drained soils, especially in winter—plant in raised beds or slopes for superior drainage. Deadhead or cut for bouquets to keep the show going until frost. It is very easy to grow and a profuse bloomer throughout the season. Enjoy the decorative seed heads in the fall, waiting until late fall or early spring to cut back.
Watering Details:
Water regularly during the first season to establish. After that, water infrequently but deeply during prolonged dry periods.
Fertilizer:
Mix about 1" of compost into soil prior to planting.
Diseases & Pests:
Prevent root disease by planting in very well-drained soils.
When to Cut for Bouquets:
Cut when about 1/2 of florets on a stem are open.
