SOWING INSTRUCTIONS
Depth:
Just cover; requires light
Starting Indoors:
6-8 weeks before last frost, sow in sterile germinating mix—barely cover and sprinkle with vermiculite to retain moisture while seeds germinate. Keep at about 65-70°F.
Starting Outdoors:
Direct sow in late spring for blooms the following year.
WHEN TO SET OUTSIDE
Set outside in spring after all danger of frost has passed.
PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Verbascum is a vigorous statuesque plant that adds drama and contrasting form to meadow, cottage, and gravel gardens in well-drained soils. In summer, bees and butterflies visit the open saucers of bloom. Cut back flower stalks, if desired, after bloom to encourage a second set of flowers, or allow the stalks to mature seeds and self-sow to continue the show in following years. Apply about 2" of mulch in autumn for wintertime protection in cold winter climates.
Watering Details:
Only need to water during especially prolonged dry periods.
Fertilizer:
Apply a granular, organic fertilizer in springtime. Too much fertilizer will hinder flowering.
Diseases & Pests:
Leaf spot and powdery mildew can occasionally be a problem, especially if plants do not get enough air circulation or receive too much moisture, as this can cause some fungal problems to spread. Prevent by placing in areas with adequate air flow and not overwatering. Also keep in mind, the richer the soil, the larger the plant.
