Chinese Foxglove

Rehmannia angulata
One of my favorites, Rehmannia produces spikes of gloxinia-shaped flowers in a delicious raspberry color, its yellow throats dotted inside with carmine. The textured leaves grow in rosettes and turn deep red in fall, spreading readily by runners where hardy. Its roots hold potent medicinal properties, part of traditional Chinese medicine. Listed in a 1915 seed catalog for florists, it has captured the hearts of generations of gardeners.

PLACEMENT & CULTIVATION
Chinese foxglove's flaring trumpets of raspberry bloom for months in summer, unlike digitalis or foxgloves springtime only show. Delicate looking but a strong grower, the rosettes of deep green leaves increase readily where happy, producing a succession of flowering spikes and turning shades of red in the fall. A welcome addition to shade gardens, edges of woodlands, containers and sunny cottage gardens, it also is a good cut flower. Deadhead or allow to self-sow.
